We began the Kaels, named after the late, great female film critic Pauline Kael, during the 2014 Oscar season in hopes of shining a light on deserving women both in front of and behind the camera. The first year we nominated only women in the Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress categories, while only nominating films that passed the Bechedel Test (in short, the film has to feature two female characters with names who talk to each other about something other than a man) for Best Picture. This year we’re opening up the nominations to include a new category: Best Character. And what’s more is we’re opening up voting to you, our readers.
Check out the full nominees list, compiled by the Filles, below and just look at how many great women–and great girl-powered films!–were left out of the Oscar proceedings. Vote for your faves (and add your own suggestions in the comments) and we’ll reveal the winners on Sunday morning before the Oscars hubbub begins.
