If you’re excited to see Ryan Murphy’s new series, Scream Queens, get ready to get filled with Glee. The show just added Lea Michele and a number of other actors to its main cast.
Fox Television Group chairman and CEO Gary Newman announced Michele’s casting at an executive session at the 2015 Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour on Saturday. In addition to Michele, who will be wrapping her role as Rachel on Glee at the end of this season, Season 1 of Scream Queens will also feature True Blood alum Joe Manganiello, Little Miss Sunshine‘s Abigail Breslin, and former Disney Channel actress and current Masters of Sex guest star Keke Palmer. Pop star Ariana Grande, meanwhile, will appear in a cameo capacity.
Before this, the only cast members attached to Scream Queens were literal scream queens Emma Roberts (Scream 4) and Jamie Lee Curtis (Halloween). The show, set to debut next fall, is centred around a series of murders that rock a college campus, making us think back to one of us our favourite underrated modern slashers, Sorority Row. We don’t know who any of the actors are going to play on the show just yet, but it’s likely that we’ll get more information about the show as it goes into production this spring. And we’re going to read into Michele and Grande’s involvement as a hint of at least one musical number to come.
At this point, Fox’s focus in terms of Murphy programming is Glee. The final set of episodes began airing in January, and according to Newman, while letting the musical comedy go is hard, offing it at this moment makes sense. “It isn’t unusual for a show that burns as brightly as Glee did … to come to an end rather quickly,” he said at the panel. “I think it’s ending at the right time.”
