Now that we’ve got a sixth season of Community, we’re bound to get that movie too, right? But of course! Well, if Dan Harmon can help it, anyway.
When speaking to a small group of journalists following a panel for Season 6 held by Yahoo at the 2015 Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour on Tuesday, Harmon said that he would absolutely love to make good on #sixseasonandmovie, provided his hopeful vision for the show’s future goes as planned.
“Here’s my Pollyanna spell I’m gonna cast, my positive visualization,” he said during the scrum outside the ballroom at the Huntington Langham Hotel in Pasadena, Calif. “The sixth season, because it’s not going to be seen by Nielsen anymore, is going to reveal that millions and millions more people have always been watching the show than have ever been measured and it’s going to become a big news item in the Wall Street Journal. And the show’s not only going to become famous because of intense entertainment value, but also it’s profitability. And the a movie’s going to be mandated by the powers that be.”
In Harmon’s wildest dreams, that movie will involve at least two pivotal parts of Community‘s past and that will make all the difference.
“Justin Lin, who did the first paintball episode, will come back,” he said in the scrum. “And we’ll do an amazing movie that even people who are unfamiliar with Community are going to say ‘This is the best movie I’ve ever seen in my entire life.'”
He added, more seriously, “That’s my plan, but I’m so open to God’s plan.”
During the panel, Harmon seemed confident that Community can last as long as fans want it, whether that means the movie or just a bunch more seasons online. “I’m definitely not writing it as if it’s the end,” he said of Season 6, which debuts on Yahoo Screen on March 17. “In my mind, I have to continue to write the show as if it’s going to last for twenty seasons.”
