TCA Winter ’15: No Walt and Jesse on ‘Better Call Saul’ Season 1

Don’t expect to be yelling “Mr. White!” while watching Better Call Saul this winter. As producers Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould revealed at the panel for the upcoming Breaking Bad spin-off at the 2015 Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour on Saturday, you won’t be seeing Walt or his infamously “bitch”-y colleague any time soon.

“In the spirit of full disclosure, Walt and Jesse will not appear in Season 1″ Gould revealed from the Huntington Langham ballroom stage.

This might be a disappointment for huge Breaking Bad fans, but we do have to remember that Better Call Saul takes place quite a while before the man we’d come to know as Heisenberg came to Saul Goodman’s office. As Better Call Saul star Michael McKean noted joked during the panel, “Jesse would be in middle school” during the timeline they are working with.

On a more hopeful note, Gould and Gilligan did say that while Jesse and Walt are not going to have cameos right off the bat, there could be other Breaking Bad-dies on the way. “Everything else is on the table,” Gould teased. “We have a corkboard in the office of all the characters we could bring back.”

“We want to see ’em all eventually,” Gilligan added. “[But] it feels like a stunt we, as the writers, have done something wrong.”

For the time being, we’re just going to see a lot more of our title character, Saul Goodman, or as he’s known on the series, Jimmy McGill. While he was just a standout on the original series, he’s the star now and so is Odenkirk. And in Gilligan’s mind, Odenkirk has stepped right into Cranston’s now-vacant role just swimmingly.

“Bryan Cranston was a real dad on the set. He was a calming presence, he was an affectionate presence,” Gilligan explained. “Bob is that guy too.”

“Bryan was a dad and I was a pissy teenager,” Odenkirk joked in response, falling right back into Saul mode again.
