NEVER SEEN IT: The Wedding Singer

Date watched: May 2, 2014

Why now?:  I saw Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and was reminded how cute these two are as a (movie) couple.  Every 10 years or so, Drew and Adam do a movie together, and I couldn’t have The Wedding Singer be the one film of theirs I hadn’t seen yet.

Why not then?:  When The Wedding Singer originally came out, I was 12 years old and was surely thinking more about the Friday television lineup (Boy Meets World, baby!) than Adam Sandler movies.

  • Adam Sandler would do his “don’t-poke-the-bear” angry yelling at least once.
  • Drew Barrymore would be charming and adorable.
  • Typical rom-com plotline–guy finds girl, guy loses girl, guy wins girl back.

What I actually got:

  • I didn’t realize the movie was set in the 80s, so when the opening credits began to roll and the music started blasting, I was stoked. The soundtrack and costumes for this movie are spot on and sometimes more interesting than the actual plot.
  • Adam Sandler did indeed do his “don’t-poke-the-bear” yelling, but he also does a surprisingly tuneful rendition of “Spin Me Right Round.”
  • Drew Barrymore was as cute as ever.  It’s worth pointing out that her hair in this film (a very 90s flipped-out bob) somehow defies gravity and doesn’t move an inch the entire movie.
  • The ending was legitimately sweet.  Even though you could see it coming, it was worth sitting through the rest of the movie.

One night-in stand or second date potential?: While the movie was sweet, it was a textbook rom-com with an extremely bitty plot. I like a good romantic comedy as much as the next gal, but this one was too fluffy for my taste. Let’s try a plot twist or some character development please! Definitely one night-in stand.
