GIMME FIVE: Girl-Powered Directors and Muses

Behind the scenes on movie sets, many a director/actor bromance has blossomed. Tim Burton and Johnny Depp, Leonard DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese, John Wayne and John Ford, Wes Anderson and Jason Schwartzmann, Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks. And we love these movie marriages!

There is also the whole director/muse situation–Nick Cassavettes and Gena Rowlands, Alfred Hitchcock and Tippi Hedren, Quentin Tarantino and Uma Thurman, Woody Allen and any female with a pulse. All male gaze issues aside, these movie marriages can be great too–at least from a purely cinematic angle.

When these types of lists pop up, no one ever mentions the women supporting women in similar symbiotic relationships. But there’s a whole slew of great women working together–girl powering it up on set and making some of my favourite movies while they’re at it.

Nora Ephron and Meg Ryan

When Harry Met Sally, You’ve Got Mail, Sleepless in Seattle

Talk about match made in heaven! No one writes charming like Nora Ephron, and no one acts charming like Meg Ryan.

When we lost the great Ephron (I still feel heart pangs), Meg Ryan went on record to say, “Nora was an era … All wisdom, wit and sparkle lights, what a treat she was … what a blessing.”

Nora Ephron and Meryl Streep

Heartburn, Silkwood, Julie & Julia

Yes. Nora Ephron gets to be on this list twice. She can be on any list twice. On and off set, Meryl and Nora made a great pair. But I mean, once someone plays you in a movie, you two must have an unspeakable bond that us commoners will never understand. Here’s Nora speaking about how it felt to be played by Meryl in her movie Heartburn.

Sofia Coppola and Kirsten Dunst

The Virgin Diaries, Marie Antoinette

This pair is like those cool girls you’re too afraid to approach in high school. Like, I want to be friends with them, but I know I’d wig out and say something awkward about soup. While they’ve only made two films together, I sure hope there’s more to come because I love me some ennui.

Nicole Holofcener and Catherine Keener

Sony Pictures Classics Premiere Of "Friends with Money" - Arrivals

Walking & Talking, Lovely & Amazing, Friends With Money, Please Give, Enough Said

Certainly the most prolific duo on the list. I can’t imagine a Holofcener movie without Keener. I hope they make movies together until they’re both old and grey. While Keener alternates between leading lady and co-star in Holofcener’s films, Holofcener always gets her best performances.

Lena Dunham and Jemima Kirke

Tiny Furniture, Girls

These two are living the dream! BFFs who get to work together all the time. Between the photos on Instagram and the cuddling at award shows, they are just like us if we were famous. Why wouldn’t you put your best friend in every movie and TV show you write and direct? I would.

  1. Great post! I hope Dunham and Kirke keep it up. I think they’re so great together. Michelle Williams and Kelly Reichardt also comes to mind.
