HOME VIDEO: Lovelace

Porn is a crazy complicated thing. It has a long messy history of being both awesome and horrible all at the same time. Depending on the porn, it can be super fun and quite a positive space for women both as an actor and a viewer. But from the beginning (who knows when that was) it’s widely been understood that the porn industry can be a nasty place for women. Lovelace gives us a glimpse into the porn industry in the 70s with one of porn’s biggest stars Linda Lovelace and the most successful porn of all time Deep Throat (1972).

Though Linda became heavily involved in the anti-porn movement later on, this movie focuses on her Deep Throat years and her incredibly abusive relationship with her partner and producer. I thought the movie would make more of a statement on porn in the 70s but it really didn’t do much of anything except blow the budget on perms. This movie reminded me of Boogie Nights (1997) with the big cast and the biopic feel but it did feel current and topical. A movie about abuse in the porn industry is a tough sell, but with the focus more on the life of a notorious porn star the movie is more accessible. Also a cameo by James Franco as Hugh Hefner didn’t hurt.

The cast is the selling point for me (also I have a weakness for giant 70s hair) Amanda Seyfried, Peter Sarsgaard, Sharon Stone and tons more. Seyfried is a very likeable lead; she’s getting there, but this movie lost me when it didn’t really take a side, not that I’m surprised that a movie about porn and a lady porn star was watered down by Hollywood but it’s really middle of the road.
