Pitch Perfect is not an easy sell if you aren’t a teenage girl. Allow me to illustrate with a brief synopsis: A group of young girls compete in a cappella singing competitions. That feels like a lousy attempt, but it’s perfectly accurate. But truthfully, there’s a lot more to this movie than you’ll get from the trailer. Allow me to try to convince you with 5 reasons you should give it a shot.
A movie that revolves around singing songs needs to have good music or else it’s just a failure. This song’s got a beautifully arranged, vocally-strong (well, it’s a cappella), stylistically creative soundtrack that you won’t be able to get out of your head. Just give it a listen.
I used to be a fan of Glee. Music was an essential part of the narrative and it always made sense. That was until the Britney Spears episode (don’t get me wrong, I’m a Britney fan) which prized immitation over originality. Anyway, I won’t get into that, but I will say that if you too are a former Glee fan still feeling sore, this movie is the perfect bandaid.
If you aren’t a Rebel Wilson fan yet, you will be after this movie. She’s hilarious. Who is she? The “free tattoo” girl from Bridesmaids, the Breast Choice salesgirl in What to Expect When You’re Expecting, the one getting married in Bachelorette… Anyway, it doesn’t matter what she’s done; what matters is that after Pitch Perfect, you’ll be excited for anything that she will do.
YOUR BOYFRIEND WILL ENJOY IT TOO
If you’re a girl who likes to tote your boyfriend along to rom-coms, this is one he may just enjoy. Great music and entertaining cast aside, it’s also got an enjoyable love story. Sure, it’s cheesy but it’s also sort of quirky, cute and irresistible.
IT’S AS GOOD AS FEEL-GOOD GETS
If you’re looking for something that’s light, fun and will leave you in a good mood singing songs for days, this is what you’re looking for. If you’re having a rough day and you need a pick-me-up, this film will do just that. If you just want a night in with your friends or your sis or, like I said, your boyfriend, this is a great pick. It was one of the most pleasantly surprising movies of the year for me and one of the ones I’m sure I’ll return to in a couple years.[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=siEHekc-1oE]
